A Maintenance Month

I actually forgot to get on the scale the last day of June, so I did it today.  Not surprisingly, June was pretty much a maintenance month (I lost 1/2 lb).  I still feel like clothes are getting looser, but with more days off-plan, more drinking, and less exercise, it’s not surprising that I didn’t really drop any weight in June.  Which is fine.  I like that I can maintain my weight without white-knuckling it.  (As an aside, if I ever do get to a point where I’m white-knuckling just to maintain a particular weight, it’s probably too low a weight!). Back in Love Again

After this past weekend, I have this song stuck in my head. I do believe I’ve fallen “back in love” with skydiving.  Oh, I never really fell totally out of love, but after coming back from my injury, I can’t say we were in that mad, passionate relationship state that we were in last fall before a planet came up to meet my legs in a most ungraceful way.  I’d only made 7 jumps since my comeback jump in April, and was having trouble motivating to jump a lot when there are all kinds of other things to do with my free time as well. Night and Day and Boogie Fever

It’s been a tough week.  Even though it’s only a 3-day work week for me since the American Boogie at Davis is this weekend, my body has decided to be unkind.  For the sake of not getting into TMI I’ll just say it’s been “women’s issues” and leave it at that.  But yesterday was a particularly miserable day … I felt particuarly slow and weak in Monkey Conditioning class, and I just felt icky and in pain much of the day (the fact that it was 90+ and I have no A/C didn’t help). Busy Couple of Weeks

Haven’t posted much as it’s been a busy two weeks.  After the holiday weekend, I spent Tuesday and Wednesday of last week in Pasadena and Burbank for work.  Saturday, Doug & Wendy were in town with their  3 1/2 year old daughter (who I hadn’t seen since she was 9 months old).  We’d originally planned to go to Children’s Fairyland down the street from me, but inclement weather had us changing plans and going to the Exploratorium in San Francisco.  We were far from the only folks who had that brilliant “entertain the kid on a rainy day” idea, but we were able to keep her amused for several hours at the museum. Nine Months from Today…

…. (oh hell no, not that!) we will be on a beautiful beach in Nicaragua enjoying the very first Boogie in Nicaragua.  Brought to us by the same fabulous folks who have organized the Boogie in Belize (which has finally run its course as the landing area was developed away), this event will be held in an all-inclusive resort right on the beach.

As soon as the dates were finalized, both Sean and I checked our respective frequent flyer accounts for available flights; since mine (Alaska miles) are able to be used on American, I was able to find the best options and booked the flights for us for next March.  (That pretty much guts my once-sizable Alaska balance; no more free international travel on my account anymore).

Now we (not-so) patiently wait.

May Wrapup

Tomorrow’s my monthly weigh-in day, but I thought I’d celebrate May’s accomplishments outside of weight loss (if there even is any). Read more »

A Bunch of Little Things

… that’s pretty much how my orthopedist described what’s going on in my right shoulder, which doesn’t surprise me all that much. Unlike my left shoulder a few years back, which had a clear injury (SLAP tear on the labrum), the exam and MRI on this one show just a bunch of piddly little things that add up to the occasional pain I’ve had for about 3 years now. There’s some fluid in there, degradation (possible partial tear) of the labrum, possible strain of the rotator cuff, possibly a small tear in the biceps tendon. Everything’s intact and still working, and the physical exam showed what I already knew – that my strength is just as good on the right as it is on the left. Read more »

Our First Real Estate Purchase

Okay, not really “real estate” per se, but we did buy an RV yesterday. A couple months ago we’d started to think “wouldn’t it be fun to go to Lost Prairie this year for the full 10 days?” but we also thought the only way we’d want to be there that long was if we were comfortable in an RV.  We looked into rentals, but let me just state for the record, they are stupid expensive.  That turned into a discussion of “Well, why don’t we just buy a used one and we can sell it in a few years and lose some money but still get more out of that money than a single rental?”  So Sean started on a craigslist quest to find the perfect RV in our price range.  I went along to look at the first one, and he looked at a couple others, all of which were rejected for various reasons.  Then, about a month ago, on a day when he was available to look but I wasn’t, he went up to Concord and found this beauty right in our price range at $5,000. If I ever have any doubt that the lifestyle choices I make (most) days have a profound impact on my overall well-being, I only need remember how I feel today. Old, fat, and cranky. Read more »

Smaller? Or Lighter?

Of course, the answer is both … but right now it seems my body is more willing to go for smaller than lighter.  I’m trying to be totally okay with that as I wore my (only slightly snug) smaller jeans today.  But I have to say that I’d also like to be lighter, for various reasons.  For one thing, it would give me more range in skydiving.  For another, I suspect it would make a lot of the fitness work I do somewhat easier.  Running has to be easier dragging around fewer pounds.  Carrying less weight should put a pull-up more within my grasp – right now that seems like something I will never achieve.
