Signs of Change (Revisited)

Posted by on November 19, 2009

About five months ago I blogged about changes I was seeing; noticing more and more lately, so maybe it’s time to check in again.

The thing I’ve noticed the most, recently, is that my heart rate doesn’t spike nearly as often or as much, and that my recovery times are much faster.  Running used to put me up in the 165-170 bpm range; now I’m down below 150 for the most part.  The very fact that I’m doing Couch-to-5K and sticking with it is a big change, too.  I’m on Week 4 this week and am pleasantly surprised by the fact that I’m able to do it.  I downloaded some podcasts to listen to, which has helped a lot, too – checking my watch constantly to figure out when I should switch from running to walking is not only annoying, I think it has a negative effect on my performance; with the podcasts, I know that I’ll get a cue when it’s time to change, and till then, I just keep running and don’t worry too much about how much time I have left.

I miss days that I can’t work out.  I feel cranky, especially if it’s a work day.  Weekends are generally more active so if I don’t get a formal workout life goes on.  But weekdays … ugh, I gotta move!  Being sick a couple of weeks ago was frustrating because I needed to cut back to feel better, and I didn’t like that working out didn’t make me feel good (at least, it didn’t feel good physically, thought it felt good to stay consistent).

Weight loss has slowed to an absolute crawl, and I may need to mix things up a little, or it may just be where my body wants to be for a while.  Still transforming what it can do, so as long as I keep my eye on that the number on the scale (or in my clothing tags) is less critical.

Keep up the running and you’ll start seeing a change again :) Once you got the couch to 5k down mix it up a little with longer runs, speed workouts etc to keep it fun. Might not see a lot of weight come up, but it will for sure lean you up.
Keep it up, you are doing friggin awesome!
