Breathe In, Breathe Out
By next Thursday I will have made three round trips to Southern California in just over a week. Our trip to Elsinore has been planned for a while (Sean’s going for the entire week for the wingsuit bigway event, I’m popping down just for the weekend). The work trips to Burbank (two days this week, four next week) came up afterward. I thought briefly about combining the trips, but since the flight is so short and I don’t have a car in Burbank, the idea of not dragging all of my skydiving gear along on the business trips is more appealing.
So, I came home yesterday evening, and fly out again late tonight, back home Sunday night, and on another flight Monday morning. With Sean being out of town, cat-sitting became a challenge to be solved. Sean has the other complete set of keys to my apartment, and I knew I wasn’t going to have time to get the keys from him before we leave tonight. So that left me with deciding to ask my upstairs neighbor to cat-sit for me. I’ve talked with him and his wife quite often, and have even hung out and had coffee with him, so of all the neighbors, he seemed like the most logical choice. Others are friendly, but I don’t really know any of them at all. Plus, he works from home so is here a lot.
Fortunately, I caught him at home and he had a couple minutes to come down and get the Franklin briefing and the key, so that’s taken care of. I even gave him the broccoli from last week’s produce delivery since I won’t be able to use it. So, hopefully a win-win for everyone!
Talked with Noah at my workout this morning about navigating travel and eating for all my meals. He was glad to hear that the cafeteria had good options, and reminded me to be aware that restaurant/cafeteria food often has lots of hidden “stuff” in it - more sugar, more salt, more fat than if it’s made myself. I’m aware of that, of course, but it’s a good reminder. He wrote out a list of possible exercises to do so I can “program” my own workouts next week, and we’ll do that each Friday as long as I’m traveling. He also encouraged me to email him with updates of my workouts and my eating, just to help keep myself honest. The good news is that there are plenty of options for getting fruit - it’s available in the Concierge Lounge at the hotel, and I can buy it in the cafeteria to have for my afternoon snacks.
So I’m ready to go, there. I also decided to put my gym membership on a “freeze,” which allows you to keep the membership active (thus avoiding having to pay the $100 initiation fee again) for $10/month. Between travel, and adding in running, and my workouts with Noah, I want to see for a while whether a membership makes sense anymore. If I’m using it infrequently, a 10-visit pass might make more sense.
I also changed the delivery schedule for my Farm Fresh to You deliveries - I was really excited to start that and got my first box next week, but every two weeks isn’t going to make sense unless I’m home most of the time. Fortunately the web interface makes it easy to adjust your delivery weeks.
So I’m taking a deeeeeep breath because I think I’ve got everything lined up to get back into this routine and do it right. This year has been very relaxing and predictable, but I’ll make this work, too. I’m hopeful that the heavy travel will be only for a couple of months, then I can have a bit more control over how many days I’m on the road.
