Ah, the Waning Days of Summer

Posted by on September 6, 2009

I suppose it is still officially summer, as we’ve not yet hit the autumnal equinox, but with it being Labor Day weekend, it feels like this is the end.  The light is fading earlier in the day, and we’ve had some chilly mornings of late making me think that fall might be in the air.

But till then I’ll enjoy what’s left of summer and remind myself that fall here in Northern California is a different animal from fall elsewhere and that there are likely still plenty of sunny warm-ish days ahead; and at the same time I can look forward to breaking out sweaters and jackets and seeing what fits this year that didn’t fit last year.

Yesterday at Skydance was the first day in several months that we weren’t sweating our asses off.  It was a lovely 64 degrees when I first arrived at about 9:30, and I don’t think it got much hotter than the low 80s.  A nice contrast from the high 90s/low 100s that have been more common this summer.  I did three nice jumps before the winds picked up then headed back to Oakland around 6:15 or 6:30 (noting that the sunlight was already beginning to fade …).

This morning I ventured down to Jack London Square to meet up with Nancy, a friend from business school who is in town for the long weekend.  We met up at The Fat Lady, which I’d not been to but which turned out to have earned its stellar reputation.  We enjoyed omelets, yummy potatoes, coffee, and pastries (complimentary) while we caught up.  After breakfast we walked down to the Jack London Square farmer’s market, where I stocked up on the still-bountiful summer produce.  I got a couple of portobello mushrooms for dinner, some fresh heirloom tomato salsa, two kinds of apples, a couple of snow melons, and a yellow watermelon.  So cool to have such an interesting mix of fruit available, and of course it’s all locally grown, which is a bonus.  I love the farmer’s market in my neighborhood, but I’m fast becoming a fan of this one, too.

Sean will be over soon to hang out for the rest of the day (bearing chips so we can enjoy some of that salsa!).  We’re both heading back up to Skydance tomorrow to enjoy the extra altitude that comes with Labor Day.
