How Does Your Garden Grow?

Recently I got inspired to try growing some vegetables and herbs out on my balcony. Since the weather was too gray for jumping, I figured today was probably a good time to start. So, I went down to my local Ace Hardware & Garden, which is well-known in these parts for having good products and great help. I found that to be true, since I, as a gardening neophyte, had a lot of questions and the staff were very helpful.
It was a bit of an expensive trip since I had to buy all the containers (though the ones for the herbs were rescued from near the dumpster at the store), but now that I’ve made the initial investment, subsequent years should be much more economical. I bought relatively inexpensive containers, but was still kicking myself for tossing old kitty litter buckets since they’d have been perfect for the tomatoes.
So, we’ll see how it all turns out. The balcony gets quite a bit of sun, mostly in the morning. All of the things I’m growing should do well in that setup and should also be relatively idiot-proof… and that’s good because I’m not the best gardener in the world! But hopefully before too long I’ll be picking fresh basil and tomatoes for a home-grown caprese salad… now all I need to do is learn how to make cheese!
