The Chill of Fall in the Air…

Posted by on December 7, 2008

… unfortunately means fog in the sky much of the day, at least out at the dropzones.  So although it was a beautiful weekend here in Oakland, Oakland is where I stayed.

But it turned out to be a nice one despite the lack of skydiving, and as I told Sean today, I’m still getting used to the idea that the weather here is seldom bad for jumping for very long (unlike the Seattle area, which could have weekend upon weekend of crappy weather).

Yesterday morning I woke up, showered, and dressed for the DZ, but realized pretty quickly that the forecast for clouds/fog in the morning was looking pretty daunting.  Called Sean and we decided to go about our days and rethink late morning.  So, I put on my walking shoes and went out to the Grand Lake Farmer’s Market for the first time in several weeks.  Did a few more neighborhood errands at Walgreen’s and Trader Joe’s, then swung back by the library to pick up a couple books on hold.

Called Sean and we decided for sure to call it as the weather wasn’t clearing by noon and with the early sunsets, that’s hardly worth the drive to the DZ.  I took advantage of the found time to get my car washed – it was absolutely filthy, having not been washed since just after I returned from Lost Prairie in August.  I then took it for an oil change, as I had put just over 5,000 miles on it since the last change – most of that mileage was from the drive to and from Lost Prairie and the move down here.   Other than driving to the DZs, I don’t put too many miles on it around here, since I walk or bus to work, or it sits at the airport while I’m in Pasadena.

Sean came over last night and I cobbled together a dinner for us by roasting the sweet potatoes I picked up at the market and cooking up some mango sausages I had in the fridge.  This morning, I’d suggested going out for breakfast, but Sean reminded me that I had mentioned dim sum recently.  He knew of a place in San Leandro, but a search of Yelp found another recommended place just a couple blocks from my apartment, so we decided to go there in the late morning.  We spent the earlier hours wandering around the flea market seeing if there were any bargains to be found.

Finally, on to dim sum, which didn’t disappoint.  It’ll be even more fun if we rally a group to go – then it’s easier to try more things before you get too full.  But we especially enjoyed the pork shu mai, the sticky rice in banana leaves, and the stuffed mushrooms.  The price was right, too.

A quick stop at Safeway to take advantage of the last day of their “buy two, get three free” special on Coke products, and back home for a lazy afternoon.  Can’t complain!
